Handmade Latvian ceramics

Latvia has a living pottery tradition, and these workshops keep it in daily use. Cepļi, the studio of Ingrīda Žagata near the Vidzeme coast, throws Latvian clay and fires it in an open-fire kiln using the traditional black, smoke-fired technique alongside glazed stoneware. VAIDAVA CERAMICS has made tableware beside Gauja National Park since 1980, and cerannic is Annija Kanska's porcelain studio in Tukums.

Bowls, plates, cups, teapots and vases: each listing names the clay, firing temperature and whether it is dishwasher or microwave safe.

Ceramics as a gift

Handmade ceramics are a gift that gets used: a mug for the morning coffee, a serving bowl for a host, a vase for someone who always has flowers. Smoke-fired black ceramics are something few people have seen, which makes them memorable.

Questions and answers

Is the ceramic tableware food safe?
Yes. The tableware is made for daily use; each listing states the glaze and whether the piece is dishwasher and microwave safe. Smoke-fired black ceramics are best washed by hand.
What is Latvian black ceramics?
Black ceramics is a traditional Latvian technique: clay is fired at around 1050 °C and the kiln is then starved of oxygen, so smoke and carbon turn the clay silver-black. The colour comes from the fire, not from a paint.
