End-grain boards and woodcraft

Andris Budrēvičs is a trained artistic furniture joiner who has made household objects in his workshop near Ķekava since 2016. His end-grain boards combine contrasting hardwoods, letting the grain decide the pattern. On an end-grain board the wood fibres stand upright, so the knife slips between them: the board lasts longer and the edge stays sharp.

Wooden boards as a gift

A colourful end-grain board is a gift for anyone who cooks, and it doubles as a serving board for cheese and bread. The wooden marble solitaire is a classic for families.

Questions and answers

How do I care for an end-grain cutting board?
Wash it by hand with warm water, dry it standing up, and never soak it or put it in the dishwasher. Oil it with food-safe board oil whenever it looks dry.
Why is end grain better for knives?
The fibres face upward, so the blade parts them instead of cutting across them. That is gentler on the edge, and small cuts close up again as the wood fibres relax.
